Long Beach Surfrider Foundation activist, John Apodaca, has invented his own martini to celebrate the Sink the Breakwater Campaign. He says it tastes much better than the water off our shores and recommend you try it at home. A clip of John and his buddy Mark on the internet radio show “Martini in the Morning” is available online at http://www.cocktailtelevision.com/. In the clip they’re introducing the Surfrider Cocktail and giving a plug for the Surfrider Foundation.
Beth Barnes, Surfrider Long Beach brings new meaning to ‘beach cleanups’ at the United States Pan Pacific Open Water 10K Swim races at Marine Stadium. The race featured open water swimmers from Australia, USA, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and Brazil’s National Teams. Beth, who was stationed on the feeding pontoon in the water with the coaches received accolades for her efforts to skim empty plastic bottles and cups out of the water after the thirsty long-distance elite athletes took only seconds to drink, then discard. Beth said that it was not only her job as a volunteer but her job as a member of Surfrider to keep the oceans free of debris and what better place than in her own backyard.
Join the American Institute of Wine and Food (AIWF) and the Aquarium of the Pacific’s Seafood for the Future Program to eat, drink, learn, and connect over Baja inspired fish tacos with a conscience. The event will take place from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at Shelter Surf Shop, 2148 E. 4th Street, Long Beach, CA 90814. The cost is $10 at the door and is for the 21 and older crowd.
With the retro California surf vibe of Shelter Surf Shop and the folksy surf music of Seth Pettersen, guests will feel like they’ve just stepped off the beach; a perfect backdrop for Baja-style beach cuisine. Why Baja fish tacos? It is summer time in Southern California and Baja-style eats are about as much a part of our culture as 405 traffic. Such close proximity to Mexico has lent the region a beautiful mosaic of different strains of Mexican cooking, especially that of Baja.
Seafood for the Future is the Aquarium of the Pacific’s nonprofit advisory and promotional program dedicated to encouraging healthy and responsible seafood choices as well as overall sustainable eating habits. The program bridges the gap between retail entities and the consumer by building a network of businesses- restaurants, distributors, and producers- that are committed to providing better seafood choices from well-managed fisheries or farms. The AIWF is a nonprofit organization and public charity dedicated to promoting health and well-being through the enjoyment of good food, drink, and fellowship that comes from dining together around the table. Known for its signature program Days of Taste® where chefs and farmers teach fourth and fifth graders how food moves from farm to table, the AIWF has 27 chapters with more than 4,000 members nationwide. July 17, 12pm at Skylinks Golf Course, Long Beach
Dave Uribe was a great friend, caring brother and wonderful son. It’s been five years since we lost him and we are celebrating his life once again with our 5th Annual Dave Uribe Memorial Golf Classic. We will be teeing it up at Skylinks Golf Course in beautiful Long Beach, CA. The tournament kicks off at noon on Saturday July 17. Dave loved golfing, surfing, baseball and any many other venues he could get his friends together for and share the good times with. Dave bridged the gaps between the ocean waves and golf courses. He was our bridge that developed lifelong friendships, created from his love of life and his unrivaled personality. This year all golf participants will be making a contribution in Dave’s name to the Surfrider Foundation and their quest for the “Sink the Breakwater” campaign. We hope that you may join us on the links or simply make a contribution in Dave’s honor to help Sink the Breakwater. Help “Dave’s Wave” to continue to swell!

June 22, 2010
Thank you to all the residents, community leadership and Surfrider members who came out to the City Hall tonight. For many of us, after 14 years of activism this was a great moment and watching the democratic process work was wonderful and rewarding (though the public comments period throughout the meeting was, lets say, interesting). On behalf of over 1500 Long Beach Chapter members, thank you City Council, one day we hope to see you on the beach (in Long Beach not Huntington or Seal) as we watch and ride the surf as it hits our shore again………
Here is the voting results from the June 22 City Council Meeting:
