On Saturday, March 2, 11am – 12pm at 2923 E Broadway, Long Beach, 90802 we’ll be holding our bi-annual training for volunteers who want to do more than beach cleanups. This is the best way to get more involved, learn about our programs, and begin to get your hands dirty while cleaning up our ocean and beaches. Right now we know we need the following positions filled: tabling personnell, Sink the Breakwater Presenters, Business Outreach Coordinator, Rise Above Plastics volunteers, Lobbying Coordinator. Our guest speaker is Pamela Manning from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, discussing the proposed county stormwater funding measure. If approved, this measure will impose a parcel fee (average of $54 a year for most residential properties) that would fund efforts to clean up stormwater that flows into the county’s waterways. The measure also impose the fee on School Districts. Details of the measure can be located here. This is quite controversial, so we expect a big showing. You can ask questions directly from the people who wrote the measure. This event is free (pizza included!) and open to the public.
Learn by doing – join us and turn a typical lawn into an Ocean Friendly Garden (OFG). We will be removing the turf grass, building healthy soil by sheet mulching (laying the materials on top to prevent sunlight from sparking re-growth of grass,) plus installing native, climate-appropriate plants and fresh mulch. (Light food and drink provided.) When: Saturday, Feb. 2nd & 9th, 10am- 4pm Please bring your own water bottle, gloves, any gardening tools you might have and sunscreen. Dear Friend: Since joining the City Council, I have been strongly advocating for Long Beach to study Breakwater reconfiguration. We made significant progress by funding the Breakwater Reconnaissance Study, and then we even set aside $4 million to complete the next phase of the study, which was expected to cost $8 million, with the Federal government responsible for funding the remaining $4 million. Well, we never got the funding support from Congress. However, there is now good news to report. What: we’ll be training members who want to be active volunteers within the chapter. This an in-depth 2 hour training session. Trainees are expected to volunteer at least 4 hours to the chapter per month for the next 6 months. RSVP to volunteer@lbsurfrider.org by Wednesday September 12th. The class will be held if at least 6 people RSVP.
